ANKLE SPRAIN

Definition an ankle sprain is when ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn.

Grade 1 Mild stretch/micro tearing of the ligaments. There is mild swelling and tenderness over the ligament, and usually the patient is able to walk with minimal discomfort.

Grade 2 Moderate stretch/incomplete tearing of the ligaments. There is moderate swelling and tenderness over the ligament and usually some bruising occurs. Walking is painful for the patient.

Grade 3 Complete tear of the ligaments in the ankle. There is profuse swelling, and bruising into the ankle. The ankle is unstable and the patient will not be able to walk on the ankle

MOI Inversion Most common mechanism for an ankle sprain, and is when the ankle rolls outward, with the foot turning inward. This results in a stretching/tearing of the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.

Eversion Occurs less often, and involves the ankle rolling inward, and the foot turning outward. This results in a stretch/tear of the ligaments on the inside of the ankle.

Treatment
– Immediate treatment of any ankle sprain should follow the acronym of “PIER”.
P – pressure, apply pressure to the ankle by using a tensor bandage
I – ice, should be applied immediately to reduce the swelling and pain
E – elevate, the ankle should be placed in an elevated position to prevent the swelling from pooling in the ankle
R – rest, the patient should rest the ankle, by minimizing the movement by using crutches
