Patellar Tendonitis/Jumper's Knee |
|
Definition
– Often referred to as “Jumper’s Knee”, patellar tendonitis is the inflammation of the patellar tendon. Pain is usually felt below the kneecap during activity and may be felt after activity for a period of time. The pain may also be felt above the kneecap in the quadriceps tendon as well. The tendon is also very point tender and may feel enlarged do to the swelling.

Method Of Injury
– Most common in athletes that do a lot of jumping (basketball, volleyball).
- Too much activity too soon
- An increase of running/jumping activity
- Usually an insidious onset (not a specific incident)
- Improper biomechanics
- Muscle imbalances
Treatment
- Initial treatment will follow the PIER principle (Pressure, Ice, Elevation, Rest)
- Modify aggravating activity (decrease jumping/running activities)
- Correct biomechanical errors
- Correct muscle imbalances through stretching and strengthening (eccentric contraction; load of muscle in a stretched position)
- Usually takes months to fully recover from patellar tendonitis
- Brace/taping to support
