Lumbar Strain

Definition
– A lumbar strain is when the muscles in the lower back are overstretched or torn. The most common muscle strained in the lumbar region is the erector spinae muscle. Pain is felt on repeating the mechanism of injury. Often pain is felt on resisted extension, and passive flexion and active flexion.

Method Of Injury

- Heavy lifting
- Improper lifting technique
- Rotation of the spine
- Forced hyper flexion

Treatment
- Initial treatment should follow the PIER principle (Pressure, Ice, Elevation, Rest).
- Proper physiotherapy/athletic therapy should also be done for proper healing of the muscle to regain full range of motion
- Stretching and strengthening of the muscle when pain free
- Brace/Support to reduce strain on lower back
