OSGOOD SCHLATTER'S DISEASE

Definition
– Adolescent inflammatory condition that affects the tibial tuberosity (where the patellar tendon attaches). The symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter are very similar to patellar tendonitis, however this only occurs in adolescents. Also, the pain will be in the lower portion of the tendon, and at the point of insertion on the tibia. An enlargement on the tibia where the patellar tendon inserts is not uncommon with Osgood-Schlatter and is very painful on palpation.

Method Of Injury
- It usually is caused by rapid growth in adolescents (males have a greater incidence than females)
- Rapid increase of strength of the quadriceps.
- Excessive running and jumping during growth spurts

Treatment
– Initial treatment follows the PIER principle (Pressure, Ice, Elevation, Rest)
- Modify activity to reduce stresses
- Cross training to reduce the repetitive stresses on the patellar tendon
- Bracing to minimize stresses through patellar tendon and at it’s insertion
