SI Joint Dysfunction

Definition
– The sacro-iliac (SI) joint consists of the sacrum (tailbone) and the ilium (hips). SI joint dysfunction refers to an abnormal function (hyper or hypo mobility) at the joint. This dysfunction in mobility places stresses on structures in or around the SI joint, and may cause pain or discomfort in the lumbar, buttock, hamstring or groin.



Method Of Injury
– The exact mechanism of injury for SI dysfunction is not known, however there are several different reasons that a dysfunction could occur. These are: 
- Muscle imbalances
- Muscle tightness
- Malalignment of the ilium
- Rotation of sacrum
- Leg length discrepancy

Treatment
– Correction of the cause of the dysfunction (usually biomechanical correction)
- Stretching and Strengthening of the appropriate muscles 
- Core and muscle strengthening is an important 
- Physiotherapy/Athletic therapy
- Bracing to stabilize the SI joint
