Skier's Thumb |
|
Definition
– Injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb. This is one of the most common injuries to the thumb in athletes. There is pain and swelling over the ulnar aspect of the thumb. X-ray should be taken to rule out any avulsion fracture of the thumb.

Method Of Injury
– Occurs from forced abduction and extension of the thumb. Holding onto a ski pole and falling puts the thumb into this position, and is how it got it’s name “skier’s thumb”.
Treatment
– Initial treatment should follow the PIER principle (Pressure, Ice, Elevation, Rest)
- X-ray to rule out avulsion fracture
- Physiotherapy/Athletic Therapy to strengthen the surrounding musculature
- Brace/support to prevent further injury of the ligament
