Tennis Elbow/Lateral Epicondylitis

Definition
– Irritation of the wrist extensor group of muscles at their common attachment at the elbow. This causes an inflammation of the lateral epicondyle and creates pain at the elbow with gripping motions and resisted wrist extension.

Method Of Injury
– Repeated eccentric contractions of the wrist extensor muscles cause an irritation of the lateral epicondyle
- Most prevalent in racquet sports
- Direct trauma may cause an irritation

Treatment
– Initial treatment should follow the PIER principle (Pressure, Ice, Elevation, Rest)
- Avoiding activities that aggravate elbow
- Physiotherapy/Athletic Therapy to stretch and strengthen involved musculature
- Brace/support to relieve stress on the elbow, and absorb shock and vibration irritating the lateral epicondyle
