Wrist Sprain

Definition
– A wrist sprain is when a ligament in the wrist is stretched or torn. There are several ligaments in the wrist that can get sprained. The most common ligaments are: 
- Collateral ligaments (radial and ulnar)
- Dorsal ligaments
- Volar ligaments
- Swelling is localized to the joint line usually and pain is elicited when the sprained ligament is put on stretch either passively or actively

Method Of Injury
– Forced flexion or extension of the wrist
- Forced radial or ulnar deviation

Treatment
– Initial treatment follows the PIER principle (Pressure, Ice, Elevation, Rest)
- Physiotherapy/Athletic Therapy to strengthen surrounding structures
- Brace/support to prevent further stretch or injury to the ligament
