A lumbar strain occurs when the muscles in the lower back are overstretched or inflamed. Low back pain is an extremely common symptom in the general population as well as among athletes.

Pain or discomfort is felt in the lower back or upper buttocks region.  Muscle spasm may also occur in the low back region.

  • Repetitive strain
  • Heavy lifting
  • Improper lifting technique
  • Poor posture
  • Poor technique in sporting activity
  • Abnormal biomechanics and muscle weakness

Rest: The patient should rest the back and minimize aggravating activities.

Ice: Apply a cold compress, wrapped in a towel or in a Trainers Choice compression wrap, to the injured area for 15 minutes per hour, a minimum of 3 times/day.

  • Athletic/Physiotherapy/Chiropractic Care to aid healing and assist reconditioning of the affected muscles.
  • Brace/Support to reduce strain on lower back.
  • Core stability exercise program
